Time for the Super Senior Tennis Birds

By Larry Turville

It’s that time of year for the snow birds to come to Florida and with them add about 500 Super Senior Tennis Birds flocking to 12 tournaments on the West and East Coast of southern Florida.   The Florida Super Senior Circuit, also known as the Super Senior Grand Prix, has been happening each winter now for almost 30 years.  It is where many highly ranked tennis players from ages 55 to 90 from around the US and Canada come to enjoy the warm weather of Florida and get in some good competition.

For 2010 the circuit has 13 tournaments with nine on the West Coast and four on the East Coast.  On the West Coast the tournaments start around the Naples – Ft. Myers area and work their way through Sarasota and finally in Clearwater – St. Petersburg.   The Naples and St. Petersburg events are scheduled to be Super Category II National Events which draw the top ranked players from around the US.  There are several world champions among those who played last year to include Hugh Thompson, King Van Nostrand, Lorne Main, Clem Hopp, Armistead Neely and yours truly.

The circuit is only partly about competition; it is the annual reunion of many of the players to compare stories of family, fishing, and the occasion great tennis match.   When tennis is over it’s time to relax and have a beer or soda and try to remember those good shots you hit.

For me this is déjà vu all over again as it was 40 years ago that Armistead Neely and I started a satellite circuit in Florida called the WATCH Circuit.  It was the first satellite circuit to receive ATP ranking points and had Andres Gomez, Johan Kriek, and Sherwood Stewart to name a few who played in it.  This year I have agreed to succeed Art Russo, who kept the circuit going for many years, as the SSGP Chairman.  One of my golfing friends asked me if it was easy to get tickets to come watch me play.    No problem, there is no admission charge (sometimes I have to bribe people with beer to watch), but we still think we hit some shots that are worth watching now and then.  So come on down, the weather’s great for playing or viewing.

The circuit is as follows and easy access to enter is http://www.supersenior.info/index.shtml or go to tennis link.
